Lisbon & Madeira Island

DAY 1 – ARRIVAL
Arrival to Madeira Airport & meeting with our representative. Arrival transfer to the chosen hotel. Check-in formalities and overnight.

DAY 2 - HALF DAY FUNCHAL
In the centre of Funchal we will take you to a visit of the Se Cathedral. Then visit to the City Market. Flowers, fruits and vegetables stands are placed around a central patio and, at the bottom of the stairs, you will find the fish marked. We will continue to The Botanical Garden where we will admire endemic species of flowers from the Island of Madeira and other plants. At the embroidery factory you will be able to see the beautiful designs created and transferred to the cloth and then the finishing process. At last, we will visit a wine cellar in which guests will have the opportunity to taste the various types of Madeira Wine. Return to our hotel.

DAY 3 – FULL DAY PORTO MONIZ
After breakfast we leave Funchal along the coastal road towards the small fishing village of Câmara de Lobos. We make a detour and visit Cabo Girão, the highest promontory in Europe and the second highest in the world (580m), with a bottom in glass and a breath-taking view. Back to the main road, we continue to Ribeira Brava. A short break will allow us to visit this pleasant seaside village before going up to Serra de Água and Encumeada, where, on a clear day, we can enjoy a beautiful view over both the North and the South coast. Proceeding to S. Vicente, we enjoy the rich and unique vegetation of the Laurissilva forest. Arriving at the coast, we head towards Porto Moniz having the opportunity to admire the road built beside the levadas: this is a route that has been carved through rocks and its a testament to human persistence and will to conquer the land. Once in Porto Moniz, you will recharge your batteries with a pleasant lunch in a local restaurant by the natural pools. On the way back to Funchal, we head towards Paúl da Serra, a 1400m high plateau. From the plateau we descend towards the coast to Ponta do Sol, Ribeira Brava and take the motorway road to Funchal.

DAY 4 – HALF DAY MONTE
Monte has been a favourite destination for visitors to Madeira since the late 19th century. The cable car takes you on a picturesque trip up to Monte where the first image that you see is the twin-towered façade of the Church (18th Century), a landmark throughout the city. In Monte a visit will be paid to Monte Palace Tropical Gardens. These gardens are amongst the finest on the island and its history dates back to the 18th century. You’ll also have the opportunity to contemplate some marvellous panels with tiles that date back from the XVI to XX cc. The toboggan ride back – basket sledge ride into Funchal ends in Livramento. The ride down the hill in the wicker sledges is an exciting one, providing you with a taste of the Madeira of the past decades, when this was the established form of transport. Return to our hotel.

DAY 5 – DEPARTURE FROM MADEIRA / ARRIVAL TO LISBON
Departure transfer to Madeira’s International Airport and flight check-in. Arrival in Lisbon Airport. Welcome and start of an half day Lisbon tour, visiting the old district of Alfama with its typical narrow alleys and St. George Castle. Then departure to Belém’s quarter to visit the Monastery of Jerónimos and the Tower of Belém, symbols of Portugal's maritime expansion. Return to our hotel.

DAY 6 – FULL DAY SINTRA
Departure to Sintra to discover one of the most romantic villages of Portugal. Taste a famous "queijada" (small round cake made with cottage cheese) and enjoy the peaceful atmosphere. Proceed to Cabo da Roca, the westernmost point of continental Europe. Photo stop in Cascais. At a previous established time return to Lisbon to our hotel.

DAY 7 – FULL DAY FATIMA / BATALHA / NAZARE / OBIDOS
Departure to Batalha, where we will visit the Portuguese Gothic masterpiece and classified in UNESCO's International Heritage list, the Santa Maria da Vitória Monastery (14th-16th centuries) – a national landmark. Special mention must be made to the Founders' Chapel, with its magnificent stain-glassed windows, cloisters, Unfinished Chapels (Manueline) and Chapter Hall. Next stop will be the fishing village of Nazaré. After visiting Sitio, a marvellous view point over the Atlantic Ocean, you can enjoy some free time or a nice fresh fish lunch at the beach area. In the afternoon departure to Obidos, a whitewashed medieval town surrounded by its castle walls. At previous arranged time return to our hotel.

DAY 8 - DEPARTURE
Departure transfer to Lisbon Airport. Flight check-in.
